Habutai is 100% pure China silk and available flameretardant or nonflameretardant in white, black, and a variety of custom dyed colors. It weighs 3/5ths of an ounce per square yard and is available by the yard or in bolt lengths of 49.2 yards (45 m). Colors are only available in bolt quantities.

When sewn together into a large drop and then placed on the stage floor, an elaborate effect of moving water can be created. The four corners are held and the large piece of silk is lifted slightly off the floor so that air is trapped underneath. As the silk is raised and lowered, the air moves in ripple-like waves to create a very convincing illusion of water.
